Network analysis is a statistical technique examining interactions typically used to analyze social networks. However, this technique can also be applied to psychological data. This is a novel approach to understanding the complex relationships among psychological constructs or symptoms, compared to viewing them solely through the linear lens of causality.
The Emotional Processes & Experimental Psychopathology Lab has used network analysis in a variety of ways, including studying symptomatology for depression and personality disorders. Network analysis determines to what degree variables in the model are distinct or related to one another utilizing the unique connections between each, and maps them as a system or constellation. This overarching view moves away from reduction to significant singular variables, and allows for more complex understanding of constructs of interest.

“One novel methodology is in the construction of temporal networks, models that
examine directionality between symptoms over time.”
